لفظ ”رومانس“ قديم فرانسيسي زبان ۾ استعمال ٿيندو هو. بعد ۾ ’رومانس‘، اسپيني، اطالوي، پرتگالي، لاطيني ۽ انگريزي زبانن ۾ ڪتب اچڻ لڳو. قديم ادب ۾ سورمن ۽ سورهين جي ڪارنامن کي بنيادي حيثيت حاصل هئي. بعد ۾ “رومانس” جو اصطلاح اهڙن قصن لاءِ مخصوص ٿي ويو، جن ۾ سورمن جي بهادري ۽ جانبازيءَ جو ذڪر مبالغه آميز انداز ۾ بيان ڪيو ويو هجي. اهڙن داستانن کي بهادريءَ وارا قصا (Chivalric Romance) چيو ويندو هو. گهڻو پوءِ چيو ويو ته رومانس هڪ اهڙو داستان آهي، جنهن ۾ زندگيءَ کان پري تصوري ماحول يا لاڙو پيش ڪيل هجي، عاشقاڻي جذبن ۽ باهمي ڪشش دوران ٿيندڙ حيرت ۽ پراسراريت جو احساس هجي. رومانس جا خاص جزا جنگ، حسن، ايمان ۽ مذهب آهن. رومانس دراصل رومانوي ۽ افسانوي ادب جو اوائلي اهڃاڻ آهي.
