معدي جي استر جي سوزش شديد (acute) يا پراڻي (chronic) به ٿي سگهي ٿي.شديد گئسٽرائيٽس جي پيدا ٿيڻ جو ڪارڻ دوائون جھڙوڪ: عام طور تي ايسپرِن (aspirin)، آئبوپروفين (ibuprofen) يا ٻين نان اسٽيروائڊل اينٽي انفلِميٽري (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs/NSAIDs) يا الڪوھل (alcohol) سبب معدي جي اِريٽيشن/ سوزش ٿئي ٿي. شديد جسماني دٻاءُ جھڙوڪ: سڙي پوڻ (burns) يا بڪين جي بيڪار ٿيڻ (liver failure) سبب به گئسٽرائيٽِس ٿي سگهي ٿي. پراڻي گئسٽرائيٽِس جو اڪثر ڪارڻ ھيليڪوبيڪٽر پلوري (Helicobacter pylori) بيڪٽيريم ٿئي ٿي ته معدي جو ھڪ ڊگهي عرصي کانوٺي الڪوحل، تماڪ ڇڪڻ يا پت (bile)، ڪنھن آٽواِميون بيماري (autoimmunue disorder) سبب جيڪا معدي جي استر کي تباه ڪندي رھي (ڏسو، anaemia, megaloblastic) يا عمر سان گڏ استر جي ناقص ٿيڻ به ڪارڻ ٿي سگهي ٿو.
